It’s on again! The long distance ocean swimming and board paddle race – the Blackhead SLSC Head2Head Ocean Classic - happens next Sunday (17th January).
This popular event, eagerly anticipated each year by both local and ocean swimmers holidaying in the area, sees its fit and eager participants undertake either a 700m or 1.5km ocean swim and a ski paddle from Black Head Beach to Diamond Beach and return.
With water safety a key priority for the club, Race Director Scott Crawford told me that "this year the club has also secured the services of a helicopter to overfly the course and Marine Rescue will provide 2 boats to stand offshore during the event. These are in addition to the jet ski and powered surf rescue IRB’s as well as ski & board paddlers”.
This fun and challenging summer event is open to any swimmer over 12 years of age and you’ll be able to complete Race Day registration and entry payments at the beach from 7am on Sunday. There are prizes on offer, event t-shirts for sale and an after event BBQ to enjoy.
The Head2Head Ocean Classic is also an entertaining spectacle for those of us who might prefer to sit back and relax under the majestic beach pine trees and ‘supervise from afar!’
So if you’re here in the area next weekend, head down to Blackhead Beach on Sunday morning to line up with the other keen competitors for the swim and paddle or simply lend your support to both the Black Head Surf Club organisers and the Classic participants.
See you on the beach.
